2022-2023 Partnership Events at a Glance

August 2022 The school year began in late August when approximately 75 newly hired Quincy Public Schools teachers were welcomed at the annual two day New Teacher Orientation. New teachers learned firsthand about Quincy Public Schools and its expectations, which included Responsibilities of Professional Staff, Student Records Confidentiality, Security and Transportation, Curriculum, Assessment, and Professional Development, Student Support Services, Restorative Practices, English Learner Education, Technology Planning, Special Education, Health Services, Student Support Services and the Educator Evaluation Process and Procedures. Special thanks to Baystate Financial/Michael Rothberg, Montilios Bakery, Quincy Credit Union, Equitable Financial Services, and the Quincy Education Association for supporting this event!

September 2022 began with the distribution of 3,300 backpacks, including school supplies, being delivered to our elementary schools. Nothing says new school year like a new backpack!! Special thanks to Cradles to Crayons, NAGE, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Granite, Quincy Credit Union, and Mass Bay Credit Union for their generosity and support of the Annual Backpack and School Supply event!

October 2022 hosted the MICCA-Marching Band Competition at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium where 50 bands from across Massachusetts competed for the grand prize! Special thanks to MountainOne Bank for supporting this event! October also meant the funding of Teacher Mini-Grants and the distribution of $40,000.00 in mini-grant funds to Quincy Public Schools professional staff grant writers. Special thanks to Mayor Thomas P. Koch, Arbella Charitable Foundation, Baystate Financial, Colonial Federal Savings Bank, Granite, Mass Bay Credit Union, MountainOne Bank, Lee Kennedy Company, NAGE, Procter & Gamble/Gillette, Quincy College, Quincy Credit Union, Quincy Mutual Group, Quirk Auto Dealers, South Shore Bank, State Street Corporation, Stop and Shop Companies and Wessling Architects for supporting the Teacher Mini-Grant event!

A huge shout out to Cradles to Crayons who donated winter clothing including coats, socks, underwear, and hygiene kits to Quincy Public Schools students (Grades K-5). Their continued generosity and support is amazing!!

November 2022 brought the annual Fall Gathering Food Drive, where food items were donated by Quincy Public Schools staff, collected, and distributed to the Southwest Community Food Pantry and Germantown Neighborhood Food Pantry. Superintendent Kevin Mulvey was pleased to present each pantry representative a check in the amount of $1,600.00.Special thanks to Baytate Financial and our Quincy Public Schools staff for their food and financial donations.

December 2022 Tis’ the Season, Symphony & Song kicked off the start of another holiday season in Quincy! This exciting event was sponsored by the Mayor of our great city, Thomas P. Koch. Conductor Yoichi Udagawa and the Quincy Symphony Orchestra did not disappoint! A Christmas Singalong and event participation by the John Adams Orchestra, the Merry Minstrels and the combined Quincy High and North Quincy High Concert Choirs and Select Choir were amazing! Proceeds of this wonderful musical event supports Quincy Public Schools Music Department.

January 2023 Interviews were held for Quincy Public Schools Outstanding Vocational Student of the Year, who represented Quincy at the 37th Annual Outstanding Vocational Student Awards Ceremony in Mechanics Hall, Worcester on Thursday, April 13, 2023. More than 50 vocational and technical students from across Massachusetts received the Outstanding Technical Student of Year Award by MAVA and the Massachusetts Career & Technical Educators Organization (MassCTE). Quincy Public Schools students were nominated by their Vocational teachers and were interviewed by a panel of judges from the Quincy School Community Partnership. During the interview process, each student shared their project, which they designed. Special thanks to the judges from the Quincy School ~ Community Partnership who interviewed each candidate. Judges included Stephen Wessling, Wessling Architects, Meghan Giovannoni, Quincy College, Bob O’Leary, Lee Kennedy Company, Michael Rothberg, Baystate Financial, Kimberly Meyer, Granite, and Kristen Robertson, Arbella Foundation.

Madeline Chen-Baryza, Quincy Public Schools 2023 Outstanding Vocational Student of the Year!

February 2023 hosted the annual 5th Grade Student Council Leadership Summit. Fifth Grade Student Leaders from each school were selected by their Principals to participate. Students participated in three Leadership Activities, facilitated by both North Quincy and Quincy High Class Officers and staff members from the Hale Family YMCA. Students also listened to Community Leaders, who spoke about what it means to be a leader. Each 5th Grade student leader received a Certificate of Appreciation from their building principal. Special thanks to the Hale Family YMCA for sponsoring this wonderful event!

The Early College High School Symposium was held for approximately 100 North Quincy and Quincy High students at the Marriott Quincy on Friday, February 10, 2023. Students participated in various workshops that supported the Early College High School initiative. Highlighting the day for Senior High School participants was the awarding of one year of free tuition to Quincy College. Special thanks to Quincy College for supporting this event and the students of Quincy Pubic Schools!

March 2023 Dr. Seuss Birthday/ Read Across America was celebrated throughout Quincy Public Schools in March. Guest readers included the Superintendent of Schools Kevin W. Mulvey, Assistant Superintendent of Schools Erin Perkins, Vice Chair of the Quincy School Committee Frank Santoro, School Committee members Kathryn Hubley and Tina Cahill and Antonio Agcaoili from the Quincy Credit Union.

The annual Credit for Life Fair, thanks to our generous sponsors and amazing volunteers, was a huge success for the 200 student participants from both North Quincy and Quincy High Schools. The fair provided students with a better understanding of decisions impacting their spending, skills to be financially wise and the importance of good credit, budgeting, and money management. April 2023 The Boston Celtics and Arbella Foundation once again hosted the CELTICS CARNIVAL on. Friday, April 28, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Student’s hard work, dedication, and persistence earned them a seat in this exceptional stadium and participation in this wonderful celebration. Students that achieved perfect attendance during the challenge months or participated in the Art or Writing contest were invited to attend the Carnival. Congratulations to all winners! Participating schools included South~West, Point Webster and Central Middle Schools. Special thanks to the Boston Celtics Team and Arbella Foundation for sponsoring this event!

As well, Cradles to Crayons delivered summer clothing, socks, underwear, and hygiene kits, which were distributed throughout Quincy Public Schools, Grades K – 5.

May 2023 brought Mayor Thomas P. Koch’s Senior Class Breakfast honoring Quincy Public Schools 2023 graduates! North Quincy High School Senior Class Breakfast: May 23, 2023; Quincy High School Senior Class Breakfast: May 24, 2023. Special thanks to Mayor Thomas P. Koch for sponsoring these events.

Quincy Rotary Club once again provided two $500.00 Vocational School students Tool Box Scholarships! Special thanks to the Quincy Rotary Club for their continued generosity!

Special thanks to the Quincy Retired Teachers Association for hosting the 42nd Annual Scholarship Awards Night and awarding 43 scholarships to North Quincy and Quincy High School students, Class of 2023.

June 2023 One hundred High School Juniors participated in the Quincy Public Schools Leadership Summit on Thursday, June 8, 2023, 9:00am – 12:00pm at Granite Links Ballroom. Students participated in 3 Breakout sessions including Making Teammates Better: Leadership & Positive Initiation; Social Media Use: Elevating Yourself & Others; and Leadership and Communication Styles. Special thanks to the Hale Family YMCA for sponsoring this event!

July and August 2023 Twenty five YMCA Camperships were awarded to Quincy Public Schools students for the summer of 2023. Special thanks to the Hale Family YMCA for this donation!

New Professional Staff Orientation

In September 2021, Superintendent of Schools Kevin W. Mulvey, J.D., welcomed approximately 60 newly hired professional staff to Quincy Public Schools. New teachers participated in a two-day (Wednesday, September 1 and Thursday, September 2) New Professional Staff Orientation at Quincy High School, to learn about districtwide information available to staff and students. Topics discussed included Academic and Student Support Services, Educator Evaluation Process and Procedures, Technology, Student Records Confidentiality, Restorative Practices, Security and Transportation, etc. Special thanks to the following Quincy School ~ Community partners, AXA Equitable/ Scott Novak, Christine Pacini, Greg Quinn, Baystate Financial/ Mike Rothberg, Montilio’s Bakery, Quincy Credit Union, and the Quincy Education Association for sponsoring breakfast and lunch each day of the New Professional Staff Orientation.

Quincy Public Schools Fall Gathering

Each November, the staff of Quincy Public Schools gathers at Quincy’s Tirrell Room to see old friends, enjoy great food and music, win prizes, and most importantly, donate a minimum of 4 non-perishable food items, per person, to fill Quincy’s Food Pantries for the holiday season. This year, due to COVID, there was no gathering at the Tirrell Room. However, the Fall Gathering was not cancelled. As a substitute, it was redesigned for the safety of all staff and took place in each individual school building. Building staff, who donated non-perishable food items, were entered into a raffle to win exciting prizes (gift certificates, lottery tickets, candy, QPS football tickets, etc.). 175 boxes of food were collected and donated to Quincy’s local food pantries. Thank you Quincy Public Schools employees for making a difference and helping to feed those in need at this time! Special thanks to Quincy’s newest car wash, ScrubaDub, for donating $1,000.00 to the Quincy School ~ Community Partnership to buy non-perishable food items for Quincy’s Food Pantries.

’Tis the Season…Symphony & Song

’Tis the Season…Symphony & Song, showcasing Conductor Yoichi Udagawa and the Quincy Symphony Orchestra, Quincy Public Schools Combined High School Choir Group (Timothy Carew, Director), the Merry Minstrels (Michael DeMarco, Director) and the John Adams Orchestra (Judy Lai, Director) did not disappoint. This exciting performance was held on Thursday, December 2, 2021 in Quincy High School’s Lloyd Hill Performing Arts Center. The live concert provided a delightful evening filled with music in celebration of the holiday season! Special thanks to Mayor Thomas P. Koch for once again sponsoring this wonderful event and Superintendent of Schools Kevin W. Mulvey for his greetings and warm welcome to guests. A holiday singalong, including Jingle Bells, Joy to the World, Silent Night, and Deck the Halls was a perfect ending to a perfect night! ’Tis the Season…Symphony & Song was broadcast live on Channel 8 and 22 thanks to Executive Director John Cleary and his team from Quincy Access Television.

As Superintendent of Quincy Public Schools, it gives me great pleasure to recognize and congratulate Quincy’s 2021-2022 Mini-Grant recipients. Each year, thanks to the generosity and support of our community business partners, the Quincy School Community Partnership awards grant funds to Quincy Public Schools professional staff. This year, 114 creative grants have been funded, totaling $40,000.00. To date, approximately $510,000.00 in grant funds have been awarded. The Quincy School ~ Community Partnership continues its mission to support Quincy Public Schools, its staff, and students. Coats, Coats and More Coats!

This year, Cradles to Crayons, an amazing partner of the Quincy School ~ Community Partnership, doubled their donation of winter coats/jackets (500 to 1,000) for Quincy Public Schools students. Hats and gloves were also donated! Leslie Bridson, McKinney Vento Homeless Coordinator/Foster Care Point of Contact for Quincy Public Schools, said it best: “The Cradles to Crayons winter clothing donation was wonderful! We were so excited to be able to supply a plethora of coats and hats/gloves to so many of our schools! Thanks to the compassion and generosity of Cradles to Crayons, we supplied warm clothing to 11 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 2 pre-school programs. Just fantastic! We’re so fortunate in Quincy Public Schools to work alongside such amazing community partners as Cradles to Crayons. All of us are collaboratively helping children and youth succeed in school, as well as showing these students that others care about their well-being.” Special thanks to Cradles to Crayons for this generous donation!!

CVTE Student of the Year

Congratulations to Antenella Ibrahim, a senior at Quincy High School, for being selected Quincy’s Outstanding Career Vocational & Technical Student of the Year! Antenella has excelled in the Health Care Technology Program at Quincy High School and has achieved many high school accomplishments, including enrollment in numerous Advanced Placement Courses, Class Rank of 67, GPA of 4.2, and a grade average of 97% in QHS Health Care Technology Program. Antenella is a member of the National Honor Society. Her many awards, honors, and certifications include CPR/AED certified, BLS certified, CNA Certification in progress, Student Athlete Award, Sportsmanship Award, and the Frank Santoro Leadership Award. She has taken full advantage of everything a comprehensive high school has to offer including college-bound academics, technical competence, extracurricular activities, and community service. This fall, Antenella will be attending Curry College, majoring in Nursing. Quincy’s Early College High School Pathway Program

“The Early College High School Pathway is a unique opportunity for current Quincy Public Schools students to prepare themselves for college success while they are still in high school. Built on the collaborative partnership between Quincy College and Quincy Public Schools, the College is excited to offer opportunities for college credit and academic pathways for students in the City of Quincy. Quincy College recognizes that a combination of academic and non-academic support, ongoing guidance, and college readiness techniques are essential to our students’ success.”

Backpack and School Supply Distribution

The Quincy School ~ Community Partnership continued its annual Backpack and School Supply Initiative during the summer of 2021. Once again, support from our generous community business partners made this initiative possible. Special thanks to Cradles to Crayons, Granite Telecommunications, Mass Bay Credit Union, NAGE (National Association of Government Employees), and Quincy Credit Union. Approximately 3,500 backpacks, with school supplies (pencils, pens, erasers, 2-pocket folders, spiral notebooks, crayons, glue sticks, rulers, scissors and highlighters), were distributed to elementary and middle school students, as well as Central Registration, located in Quincy High School.

Due to health and safety protocols, supply-filled backpacks were delivered to schools and distributed to classrooms by building staff. There were no formal ceremonies held this year.

Stop & Shop Continues to Give

Thanks to the generous donation of food items from Stop & Shop, the Quincy School ~ Community Partnership provided food items for approximately 35 Clifford Marshall School families for February School Vacation Week. Food items will also be provided during the April School Vacation Week. Advanced registration is required. Special thanks to Stop & Shop for this generous donation!!

Quincy’s High School Robotics

Quincy Public Schools’ high school Robotics Team, HYPER, will explore the future of transportation. “By encouraging participants to think about future transportation sustainability, they are being empowered to be the next generation of leaders and innovators, tackling the world’s toughest challenges.” Team HYPER, with the help of engineering mentors, has prioritized strategy, designed, assembled, wired and programmed this year’s robot. HYPER looks forward to competing in the Greater Boston Regional Event, March 25-27 and the WPI Event April 8-10.

Team HYPER has been awarded grant funds totaling $2,250.00 from Lockheed Martin for the third year in a row, thanks to alumni Elio Daci, an Operations Leadership Development Program member, currently working as an Industrial Engineer. As well, Gillette/Procter & Gamble has once again awarded $10,000.00 to Quincy’s high school Robotics Team in support of this amazing program.

Thank You Arbella Insurance Foundation and the Boston Celtics

“The Arbella Insurance Foundation together with the Boston Celtics aim to excite, encourage, and incentivize perfect attendance and positive school culture for middle school students at Point Webster and South ~ West through prizes and an exclusive Celtics-themed Carnival.”

The All-Star Program Launch Event, held at each middle school, generated much excitement and rallied the students to try their best to reach the goals of the program, which included students having perfect attendance and encouraging a positive school culture. Boston Celtics players and Lucky attended each All-Star Program Launch. Excited students at each school were given Celtics T-Shirts and had the opportunity to ask each player questions. Students also had the chance to win Celtics Game Tickets, autographed Celtics basketballs, Celtics hats, and sunglasses. It was an exciting afternoon for all participants! Students who reach the goals of the program will attend a Carnival Event at the Reggie Lewis Arena, May 26, 2022, which will include Celtics VIPs, Carnival Games, Video Game Station, Food Truck and Contests with prizes. An exciting sidebar ~ “Since the launch of the All-Star Program, the Celtics won 10 games in a row!” Go green!!!! Special thanks to Arbella for this generous donation!

Fall Gathering 2021

The fall season is upon us and with that comes the annual Quincy Public School’s Fall Gathering, which provides QPS employees the opportunity to gather for a fun-filled afternoon.  Most importantly, the Fall Gathering provides us the opportunity to aid, fill and support Quincy’s local food pantries (Germantown Neighborhood Center, Southwest Community Center, and   Salvation Army) with non-perishable food items.

As you are aware, last year’s event was canceled, due to COVID-19.  This year, for the safekeeping of all, the event has been redesigned with the same goal in mind: To fill Quincy’s local food pantries.  Sadly, there will be no gathering at the Tirrell Room.  Nonetheless, we are hoping that each QPS personnel will once again donate 4 non-perishable food items for Quincy’s shelters.  Boxes will be located in each main office.

Quincy’s 2021 Outstanding Career Vocational Technical Student-of-the-Year

Each year, many talented CVTE high school seniors from both North Quincy and Quincy High are nominated for Quincy’s Outstanding Career Vocational Technical Student-of-the- Year. CVTE teachers nominate qualifying students for this award and forward their names to the selection team. The Student-ofthe- Year selection criteria includes:

  • A 3.5 Grade Average
  • Technical Competence
  • Excellent Attendance
  • Leadership Qualities
  • Vocational-Related Work Experience,
  • Participation in Extracurricular Activities
  • Community Involvement, and
  • The recipient of the John and Abigail

After reviewing the submitted student qualifications, the field was narrowed to 8 nominees:

  • Benjamin Chin, Plumbing Technology
  • Olivia Delprete, Legal and Protective Services
  • Supriti Karki, Engineering Technology
  • Matthew Kelly, Carpentry Technology
  • Mikayla Kennedy, Health Care Technology
  • Meghan MacNeil, Culinary Arts
  • Stephanya Mendes, Early Education and Care
  • Joseph Saccoach, Film and Television Production

Nominees were then interviewed by members of the Quincy School ~ Community Partnership about their career major, skills learned, credentials earned, contributions made to their high school and community, and their post-graduation plans. In addition, nominees demonstrated their technical competence by sharing a slide or video presentation in their major. After much discussion, the 2021 CVTE Student-of-the-Year was selected!

Congratulations to Supriti Karki for being selected Quincy’s Outstanding Career Vocational Technical Student-of-the-Year. Supriti has excelled in the Engineering Technology program at Quincy High School. She has taken full advantage of everything a comprehensive high school has to offer ~ college preparation academics, technical competence, extracurricular activities, and community service. Supriti will attend Tufts University in the fall and will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Congratulations to finalists Stephanya Mendes, Mikayla Kennedy, and Matthew Kelly who will also receive $1,000.00 scholarships and Benjamin Chin, who will receive a $500.00 Toolbox Scholarship. Thanks to QSCP Partner Stephen J. Wessling of Wessling Architects, who generously donated $2,000.00 in support of these scholarships. Special thanks to the partners of the QSCP who volunteered their time and expertise to be part of the CVTE Student-of-the-Year Selection Team!

Student Chefs Serve the Quincy Community

The Quincy School ~ Community Partnership (QSCP) is grateful to once again partner with Stop & Shop Companies to support the education of QPS Culinary Arts students throughout the 2020-2021 school year. Stop & Shop, an Executive Level Sponsor of the QSCP, is generously donating $10,000.00 in product to support Quincy High School’s Culinary Arts students in preparing food for local non-profit and municipal organizations.

  • On Friday, December 18, 2020 (Term 1), a Grab & Go Lunch was prepared for Quincy’s First Responders (Police, Fire, Brewster Ambulance, Health Department, QPS Nurses). Lunches were planned, prepared and packaged by students enrolled in Quincy High School’s Culinary Arts Program and delivered to each site.
  • On Friday, February 5, 2021 (Term 2), dinner was enjoyed by 50 guests at Father Bill’s & MainSpring (FBMS) Homeless Shelter. Quincy High School’s Career Vocational and Technical Education Culinary Arts students designed and developed the menu, prepped and prepared all food items, and packaged the food for delivery, under the guidance of their Culinary Arts instructors, Mr. Mark Kelly, Ms. Dawn Marie Gainey and Ms. Jacqueline Niosi.
  • On Tuesday, March 23, 2021 (Term 3), a Grab & Go Lunch was prepared for Quincy’s Department of Natural Resources (Parks, Forestry, Cemetery, Recreation, and Conservation), as well as the Department of Public Works (Traffic, Parking, Alarm & Lighting (TPAL), Highway, Sewer/Water/Drain, Engineering, Inspectional Service (building, plumbing, wiring) and administrative support for each office). Lunches were planned, prepared and packaged by students enrolled in Quincy High School’s Culinary Arts Program.
  • Planning is underway for the April 2021 (Term 4) ~ Grab & Go Lunch for Seniors

Cradles to Crayons Donates 500 Winter Coats to QPS Students

The Quincy School ~ Community Partnership is grateful for the continued  generosity and support of Cradles to Crayons! Five hundred winter coats with matching hats and gloves were donated to the Quincy School ~ Community Partnership thanks to Cradles to Crayon’s Winter Coat Initiative. Coats were distributed to each Quincy Public Schools elementary school, as well as Point Webster (Grade 5) and South ~ West (Grade 5) for distribution by building principals.

Backpacks & School Supplies

Special thanks to Cradles to Crayons, NAGE, Granite Telecommunications, Mass Bay Credit Union, and Quincy Credit Union for your generous donation of supply-filled backpacks for the students in Quincy Public Schools. Although the start of the school year was like no other, a brand-new backpack and school supplies were welcomed by our students and families. Thank you for your continued generosity and support!

Innovation Learning Team Grant Awards

Each year, thanks to the generosity and support of our local community business partners, the Quincy School ~ Community Partnership awards grant funds to Quincy Public Schools professional staff. To date, approximately $460,000.00 has been awarded.

Purpose: The purpose of the 2020-2021 competitive Innovative Learning Grant was to support Quincy Public Schools professional staff in designing and developing digital lessons, which support digital/remote learning and are reflective of the curriculum.

Priorities:  Applicants created a minimum of three sequential digital lessons, which included three innovative hands-on learning activities. Applicants also created a Digital Learning Grant Assessment tool.

Eligibility: Eligible applicants included all Quincy Public Schools professional staff.

Funding: Teams, consisting of 3-5 professional staff members, received a stipend of $2,500.00 to be shared equally amongst team members. Up to fourteen teams could be awarded grant funds totalling $35,000.00.

Fund Use: Grant funds must be used to design and develop digital lessons including engaging, hands-on activities consistent with all systemwide/ state requirements. Grant Teams awarded funding are required to share their Digital Learning Grant with grade level peers across the city.

Congratulations to the 10 teams of teachers (representing all grade levels) whose grants were selected for funding. Areas of focus included: Zones of Regulation (coping skills), Social Emotional Learning, Evolution of Atomic Theory, the Earth’s Water System, Camouflage – Changing to Hide, Abstract Concepts of Electricity and Magnetism, Function of the Digestive System, Understanding Multiplication, and Density, Heat, Transfer and Phase Changes.
